Asphalt Rejuvenator

Asphalt Rejuvenator for Restoring Aged Asphalt Pavement

Introduction: What Is Asphalt Rejuvenator?

Asphalt rejuvenator is an asphalt pavement recycling material. Its primary function is to fully dissolve and disperse the asphaltenes in aged asphalt, adjust the proportion of components in the aged asphalt, thereby improving the performance of the aged asphalt. It also enhances the road performance of the recycled mixture by introducing a special polymer substance that offers a certain strengthening effect. It is suitable for plant hot recycling and in-place hot recycling renovation projects of asphalt pavements for various grades of highways, municipal roads, and airport runways. When used for plant hot recycling, it can significantly increase the utilization rate of reclaimed materials.

How Does Asphalt Rejuvenator Work?

Asphalt Rejuvenator works primarily through penetration, diffusion, and interaction with aged asphalt binder.  The rejuvenating material penetrates into the aged asphalt surface and interacts with the oxidized binder.

This process can help:

  • Restore asphalt binder flexibility

  • Reduce binder brittleness

  • Improve resistance to cracking

  • Reduce the effects of asphalt oxidation

  • Slow further pavement deterioration

The effectiveness of rejuvenation depends on the age and condition of the pavement, penetration depth, rejuvenator formulation, application rate, temperature, and existing asphalt binder properties.

Advantages of Asphalt Rejuvenator

  • Restores aged asphalt binder-Helps recover flexibility and binding performance.

  • Improves RAP utilization-Enables higher use of reclaimed asphalt materials.

  • Enhances pavement durability-Helps improve the long-term performance of recycled asphalt mixtures.

  • Easy application-Suitable for plant hot recycling and in-place hot recycling.

  • Supports sustainable paving-Reduces the demand for virgin asphalt materials and promotes asphalt recycling.

Applications of Asphalt Rejuvenator

Asphalt Rejuvenator can be used for a wide range of asphalt pavement maintenance applications, including:

  • Aged asphalt roads

  • Residential streets

  • Municipal roads

  • Parking lots

  • Driveways

  • Airport pavement maintenance

  • Commercial pavement

  • Asphalt overlays

  • Pavement preservation projects

  • Oxidized asphalt surfaces

It is particularly suitable for asphalt pavements showing signs of aging, oxidation, surface drying, or loss of flexibility but that still have sufficient structural integrity.

How to Use Asphalt Rejuvenator

Asphalt rejuvenator is mainly used in hot recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) to restore the performance of aged asphalt binder. It can be applied in both plant hot recycling and in-place hot recycling projects for highways, municipal roads, and airport pavements.

Step 1: Determine the Rejuvenator Dosage

The recommended dosage of Go Green Asphalt Rejuvenator is generally 0.2%-0.35% of the milled RAP material. The actual dosage should be determined through laboratory testing according to the aging condition and RAP content.

For reference, when the RAP contains approximately 50% reclaimed material, a dosage of around 0.25% of the milled material can be used as a starting point for mix design.

Step 2: Heat the Asphalt Rejuvenator

For direct spraying, heat the rejuvenator to approximately 80-130.Heating helps improve its flow, dispersion, and penetration into the aged asphalt material.

Step 3: Add the Rejuvenator

There are two common methods:

Method 1: Direct Spraying

Use dedicated rejuvenator spraying and metering equipment to spray the heated rejuvenator uniformly onto the heated RAP material. The treated RAP is then mixed with new aggregate and new asphalt in the mixing drum.

Because the dosage is relatively small, precise metering equipment is recommended to ensure uniform distribution.

Method 2: Pre-Mixing with New Asphalt

The rejuvenator can also be blended with the required amount of new asphalt in a dedicated asphalt blending tank.

Maintain the asphalt at its normal insulation temperature and mix the rejuvenator and new asphalt thoroughly by mechanical stirring or by circulating the asphalt through the pump 2-3 times. This method provides more consistent dosing and is easier to control during production.

Step 4: Mix with RAP and New Materials

After the rejuvenator has been added, combine the treated RAP with the required amount of new aggregate and new asphalt according to the approved mix design. Mix thoroughly to ensure the rejuvenator is evenly distributed throughout the recycled asphalt mixture.
